Waste Electrical

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations.

From the 1st July 2007 the introduction of the above regulation came in to force.

The WEEE Regulations apply to electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) which falls within the 10 product categories listed in the WEEE Directive:-

Large household appliances
Small household appliances
IT & Telecommunications equipment
Consumer equipment
Lighting equipment
Electrical and electronic tools
Toys leisure and sports equipment
Medical devices
Monitoring and control instruments
Automatic dispensers

Waste electrical goods range from hairdryers to washing machines and make up the fastest growing waste stream in the UK.

In one year the amount of electrical waste we create in the UK would fill the new Wembley 6 times!

This is a lot of electrical waste! So to reduce the amount of electrical items going to landfill the government has introduced some new regulations.

As part of the UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations, distributors (retailers) are required to provide information to their customers on:

1. Requirements of the UK to minimise the disposal of WEEE to landfill and
     to achieve high levels of collection of WEEE for environmentally sound
     treatment.
2. The collection and take back systems avalible to them.
3. Their role in contributing to the reuse, recycling and other forms of
     recovery of WEEE under the regulations.
4. The potential effects on the environment and human health as a result
    of the presence of hazardous substances in EEE the meaning of the
     crossed out wheeled bin symbol.

You will pleased to know Ronald White Photographic & Optical Specialists (Registration ID 2710) has done it's part by joining a DTS (Distributor Take Back Scheme).

Joining the DTS means:-

Full exemption from offering in store take back and prosecution until December 2009.
